Former Norwegian national team coach Geir Endre Rogn warns that the current weather conditions may particularly affect emerging athletes, especially in a season where much depends on performances before Christmas.

He explains that the unpredictable weather could disrupt plans as Norwegian athletes approach the important lead-up to the season opener in Beitostølen.

Rogn advises athletes to prepare for changes, stating that while everyone prefers a clear plan, the mild weather forecast makes it essential to have alternatives ready. Athletes might need to adapt their training, utilizing running and roller skiing more than expected.

Although Rogn understands the stress felt by athletes aiming for World Cup spots or the World Championships, he believes it’s not a disaster if dryland training continues for a few more weeks. Training with running shoes and rollerskis can sometimes be of higher quality than on poor snow conditions.

He also notes that athletes might need to get creative with their sessions, using treadmills, roller skiing at safer times, or even traveling to places like Torsby or SNØ for snow tunnel training.

Finland as a potential solution

Alternatively, Rogn suggests considering early-season snow destinations like Muonio in Finland, where conditions are usually good in early November. This has been a favored location for many athletes, especially those from Northern Norway.

However, for those who can’t travel, Rogn emphasizes that a delay in snow training doesn’t necessarily mean failure at the Beitostølen opener. He points out that athletes should instead focus on performing well in subsequent races, such as the ones in Gålå, which are more crucial for World Championship qualification.

Junior athletes should stay calm

Lastly, Rogn advises junior athletes not to stress over snow conditions in November, as their major competitions, like the World Junior Championships, do not take place until much later in the season. Therefore, they should view November as a continuation of their dryland training.
