Sweden is sending a strong and youthful delegation to Madona, Latvia, for the 2025 Roller Ski World Cup opener and Junior World Championships, taking place from July 17 to 20. The national team features a record number of debutants and a promising new generation aiming to make their mark on the international stage.

The Swedish Ski Association officially announced the selected athletes earlier today, highlighting both the roller ski World Cup squad and the junior team heading to Madona. This year marks a generational shift, as several senior athletes have retired or transitioned to new roles, opening the door for emerging talents.

Madona is a familiar venue in the roller ski world, known for hosting more World Cup events than any other location. Its hilly and technically demanding track has previously hosted both senior and junior world championships, offering a challenging arena for the four-day event.

A New Generation Steps In

With experienced names like Linn Sömskar and Jackline Lockner no longer competing, the spotlight now turns to the new wave of Swedish skiers. Despite the large number of newcomers, Sweden arrives in Latvia as one of the strongest nations on the start line.

“Even with eight debutants, the Swedish team is viewed as perhaps the most competitive in the field,” the association said in a statement.

The event program kicks off with an individual start 10km classic race, followed by a team sprint—an event in which Sweden has traditionally dominated. The weekend continues in downtown Madona with the spectator-friendly 200-meter supersprint and concludes with a demanding 20km freestyle mass start on Sunday.
