100 kilos, 10 km, and an astonishing time – a potential World Record

A clip from the feat has gone viral. Now there’s speculation that the Swedish ski star may have also broken the World Record.

Reactions after the performance in the 10-kilometer race have gone viral. A clip from the event has been viewed almost a million times.

“People are writing that it’s some of the craziest things they’ve ever seen,” says Edvin Anger.

When the Swedish ski star stepped on the scale at home in Östersund, a number just over 100 kilos appeared on the scale: 100.2 kg.

On the training plan was a 10-kilometer run, and in his mind, one question: How fast is it possible to run 10 kilometers weighing over 100 kilos? The answer? Very, very fast.

Personal best by a minute and a half

“It went crazy fast at the start, and I didn’t know how I would manage to keep the pace. But once I managed to hang on, it was just a matter of fighting all the way to the finish,” the 23-year-old told Expressen.

Anger, who won the U23 World Cup and finished second overall in the World Cup last winter, finished fourth in the prestigious recreational race Blodomloppet. He clocked 31 minutes and 37 seconds, smashing his personal best by over one and a half minutes.

For comparison, former cross-country World Champion Hans Christer Holund ran 30:24 in the Drammen 10K earlier this year, where he also broke his personal record. Holund does not weigh 100 kilos and has specialized in running since retiring from cross-country skiing in April 2023.

The cross-country skier record for the running distance is 29:30, which belongs to Magnar Lundemo and was set in 1966.

Could be a World Record

Anger’s time made legend Johan Olsson rub his eyes.

“I reacted immediately when I saw the time,” said the former World Champion.

“I’ve seen speculation that it could be a World Record for a runner over 100 kilos. It’s not impossible,” Olsson added.

Anger is aware of the speculation. His explosive time has also gone viral on social media.

“There’s been a lot of talk about the race. Many people don’t believe I weigh 100 kilos, but I can step on a scale, and they can come see for themselves,” says the 23-year-old, laughing.

Experts amazed

Olsson is also impressed with the young ski star’s technique and development. Last year, Anger improved his 10K time by four minutes. This year, he shaved off for another one and a half minutes.

“It’s exceptional. What can you say about his development? In two years, Edvin Anger will run the Finnkampen (athletics meet, editor’s note). He runs technically well, and it doesn’t look like he weighs 100 kilos. But there’s an enormous engine under that chest,” says Olsson.

Edvin Anger says the result gives him extra confidence heading into the season, which starts at the end of November.

“My peak level is higher than before. Last year I was more tuned for roller skiing, but this year I’ve focused more on training hard leading into the season.”

Is the goal now to break 30 minutes for 10 kilometers someday?

Yes, damn… Then it’ll be Finnkampen instead of the World Cup,” Anger says.
