On Saturday, Alvar Myhlback, Lager 157 Ski Team, starts his first competition in Ski Classics Season XV.

Ski Classics Season XV restarts this weekend after the Christmas and New Year’s break with the 3 Zinnen Ski Marathon in Italy. The young Swedish Alvar Myhlback will be on the start line.

Last winter, Alvar Myhlback focused on long-distance skiing. The biggest success was when the 17-year-old finished eighth at Vasaloppet.

For this season, he has primarily focused on the traditional cross-country skiing, started at four World Cup events, and is aiming for the Junior World Championships in Planica, Slovenia (to be held on February, from 5 to 11).

But for the next three weekends, the idea is for him to race the Ski Classics Pro Tour. On the program is Saturday’s 3 Zinnen Ski Marathon (which for this year’s edition has been renamed from the Pustertaler Ski Marathon), the Engadin La Diagonela the next weekend and the first Grand Classics event of Season XV at Marcialonga on January 28.

Now, Myhlback joined the Lager 157 Ski Team’s line-up:

“I think it may take some time before he is in it again. Now he’s been focused on traditional since September, or at least until a month ago. I think it will get better and better in these three races. But Alvar is offensive and forward, he will tighten the bow,” says Pro Team Director Anton Järnberg.

What does the competition program look like?
“There will be three races in the Ski Classics now; then Junior World Championships which means he will not race Jizerská50. Then we’ll have a discussion and review after that,” says Järnberg, whose Pro Team also has a season debut for Torleif Syrstad.

“Torleif has studied to become a physiotherapist and has an internship period that must be completed. So, since August he works full-time in Meråker and trains mornings and evenings. He will race this weekend’s race and Marcialonga, then we believe and hope that he will be able to race all competitions from the time the Ski Classics “move” to Sweden and Norway from mid-February,” says Järnberg.

Torleif Syrstad did his first race in the Ski Classics in 2016 and has, among other things, been third at Vasaloppet twice.
