Sensation in the sprint in Trondheim: Putting the country on the map
The 21-year-old from Andorra won gold at the Junior World Championships last season. This week, she sensationally advanced to the semifinals at the World Championships sprint in Trondheim.
The sprint sensation from Trondheim, Gina del Rio from Andorra, was born in 2004 and has proven during her junior years that she is the country’s big hope in cross-country skiing.
At last winter’s Junior World Championships, she won the sprint and secured Andorra’s first-ever gold medal in Nordic skiing. As recently as January, she finished second in the U23 World Championships behind Märta Rosenberg.
Her best result in the World Cup this season is a 28th-place finish in a sprint during the Tour de Ski.

Sensationally Reaches the Semifinals
Gina del Rio started this week’s sprint with a shock performance, finishing a sensational sixth in the prologue. In the quarterfinal, Del Rio placed third, just ahead of Märta Rosenberg, who replaced Linn Svahn. But the heat was fast enough, and both the gold and silver medalists from the U23 World Championships secured spots in the semifinals.
In the semifinal, Del Rio pushed hard and took the lead early on, but it wasn’t enough to go all the way. She ultimately finished fifth in the second semifinal and was eliminated. However, with the performance, Del Rio showed that she will be a contender in future championships. After all, she is only 21 years old.
