After months of speculation and growing anticipation, Therese Johaug has officially confirmed that she is not aiming for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina.

After months of speculation and growing anticipation, Therese Johaug has officially confirmed that she is not aiming for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina.

The Norwegian cross-country skiing star Therese Johaug shared the news on social media earlier today, putting an end to a wave of rumors that had followed her throughout the past months.

“After having some distance from the season, I’ve decided not to aim for the Olympics. It’s been an adventure to be back on the team this winter, and even though I still love skiing, I feel a strong need to spend more time with my family.

I’m looking forward to cheering on @langrennsjentene1 from the sidelines on the road to Cortina 🇮🇹 and want to say a big thank you to everyone who supported me in my comeback. A special thanks to my better half @nilsjakobhoff. Without you, this wouldn’t have been possible,” says Therese Johaug in a post on social media.

Comeback Sparked Speculation

Johaug returned to elite-level skiing last season, competing in events such as the World Cup stages and World Championships in Trondheim. Her performances quickly reignited rumors of a full comeback aiming for the 2026 Winter Olympics, especially after she delivered dominant results.

Earlier last week, her decision to decline the national team’s training camp further fueled speculation. As previously reported by ProXCskiing.com, the Norwegian Ski Association had left the door open for Johaug to join the Olympic preparation group, while Johaug herself said she needed more time to decide.

In interviews and media appearances throughout the spring, Johaug was consistently asked about a possible return to top-level competition. She initially said she would reveal her plans in April but later postponed her announcement, citing the need for reflection and balance between sport and family life.

A Final Answer

Today’s statement marks a definitive end to the Olympic comeback discussion. Johaug now shifts her focus to supporting the Norwegian women’s team from the sidelines while continuing to balance her life with family priorities.

While she may not be chasing Olympic gold again, her presence in the world of skiing remains strong. Whether through media, mentorship, or appearances, Therese Johaug’s legacy and influence continue to shape Norwegian cross-country skiing.
