Silje Theodorsen made a big leap from her World Championships debut in 2023 but fears the rest of her championship is over after Tuesday’s 10-kilometer race in Trondheim.

Theodorsen finished in 13th place—11 positions better than in her World Championship debut in Planica in 2023. However, the 30-year-old from Tromsø, Norway, found little to be happy about in Tuesday’s 10-kilometer classic race at the World Championships in Trondheim.

Even though she met her goal of earning a spot on the Norwegian team and improved her result compared to her debut in 2023, she found little consolation in that.

“I feel like I had the opportunity of a lifetime, and I wasted it. That’s the feeling I’m left with,” she said, disappointed.

A Tough Race in Difficult Conditions

“It was a cool experience, but I wish I had skied a bit faster,” said Theodorsen, who competes for the private team Team Aker Dæhlie.

She refuses to blame the conditions, though.

“It was absolute chaos out there today. But it’s the same for everyone, and the best handle it well. I need to go home and practice.”

Uncertainty About the Rest of the Championships

Theodorsen has not completely ruled out the possibility of competing in more races at the World Championships in Trondheim, but she has not received any indication either way. She also does not feel she has made a particularly strong case for selection.

In addition to Therese Johaug, who took silver just over a second behind World Champion Ebba Andersson, Heidi Weng finished fifth, and Astrid Øyre Slind placed sixth. They were 26.3 and 29.2 seconds behind the Swede, respectively. Theodorsen finished a minute and a half behind.

Following the team sprint on Wednesday, March 5, the remaining events are the 4×7.5-kilometer relay on Friday, March 7, and the 50-kilometer race on Sunday, March 9.

A Difficult Day for Norway

Theodorsen was not the only Norwegian skier who had a tough day. Therese Johaug had to settle for second place behind Sweden’s Ebba Andersson for the second time in these championships.

After crossing the finish line and confirming another silver medal, Johaug walked straight out of the area and into a garage next to the athletes’ locker rooms. She stayed there for 15 minutes until a representative from the International Ski and Snowboard Federation escorted her to the medal ceremony.
