Halfvarsson changes ski club
Calle Halfvarsson was born and raised in Sågmyra, Sweden, and it was in the ski club Sågmyra SK that he received his skiing education. After a year at the ski high school in Mora, Halfvarsson changed clubs to IFK Mora SK in 2006. Now he makes the change again:
“When he changed to Mora last time, during his time as a junior, as a small club, we simply could not afford to keep Calle. There were flights to the Swedish Cup in Piteå and Gällivare. But even then, Calle said he would return to Sågmyra SK when he had enough sponsors. And he kept it,” says Sågmyra SK chairman Mats Hellberg.
Eight years ago, Halfvarsson returned to the club after competing for Falun-Borlänge SK for a couple of seasons.
“Last week, Calle got in touch and wanted to meet, and then I began to suspect that there might be a club change in the works. I wish Calle the best of luck; there are no hard feelings from our side. He gets new opportunities, both financially and with a bigger waxing team. Then the agreement is a loan for two seasons, which means that we also get a small financial compensation because, for our sponsors, it will be a big difference if Calle skis for us or not,” says Mats Hellberg.
Calle Halfvarsson to Expressen:
“I am very loyal to the village. So, it hurts to leave Sågmyra. The idea was to stay there for the rest of my career, but now it will be like this,” he tells Expressen.
And according to the newspaper, he could also start at Vasaloppet next season.
“I started to think more and more about it. Nothing is completely certain, but the possibility exists since it is no major championship season. If it’s the case that I’m in and fighting for victory in the World Cup overall, maybe there won’t be Vasaloppet. But otherwise, it can be a possibility. And then, it’s an advantage to start for Mora with their big team,” says Halfvarsson to Expressen.
The 100th edition of Vasaloppet will be held on the first Sunday of March, the same weekend as the Lahti World Cup.
