Calle Halfvarsson is leaving the national team after 14 years. Expressen was the first to report the news. He spoke to the newspaper about his decision.

“The big news is that I will be leaving the national team ahead of next season. And it’s a team I’ve been part of for a very long time. I actually don’t even know myself how many years it’s been,” Calle Halfvarsson told Expressen.

Thought Long and Hard

The 36-year-old has been the most experienced skier in the men’s national team in recent years. He made his World Cup debut in 2009 and was first selected for the A-team in 2011. Since then, he has held that spot – until now.

“I’ve thought about different scenarios for next season, with the Olympics being the big goal. What’s good, what’s bad, what path do I want to take? This decision wasn’t made overnight,” he told Expressen and continued:

“But in the end, I simply came to the conclusion that this, going solo, is the best path for me right now.”

Changing Focus

Calle Halfvarsson is coming off a tough season, repeatedly missing competitions due to a back injury. It is still unclear who will be his new head coach, but his focus will shift.

“Yes, the plan for the last years of my career is to focus on sprint,” he said.

How did you come to that conclusion?

“Honestly, I’ve never really done that before. I’ve mostly just trained for distance and followed more or less the same routine every year. So, this feels like a nice challenge,” he said in conclusion.
