Participants and spectators of the Vasaloppet Winter Week 2025 brought SEK 289 million (approx. EUR 25.85 million) in revenue to the Vasaloppet municipalities of Älvdalen, Mora, and Malung-Sälen.

Participants and spectators of the Vasaloppet Winter Week 2025 brought SEK 289 million (approx. EUR 25.85 million) in revenue to the Vasaloppet municipalities of Älvdalen, Mora, and Malung-Sälen.

This winter’s participants and spectators are estimated to have spent SEK 302.2 million (approx. EUR 27.03 million) before and during the events. Of that amount, SEK 288.6 million (approx. EUR 25.81 million) was spent within the three Vasaloppet municipalities.

These figures come from a tourism economic survey of the 2025 Winter Week. The investigation was conducted by Upplevelseinstitutet and published in Siljannews.

“This is a humble way of showing the powerful impact our Winter Week has on each of our municipalities,” says Johan Eriksson, CEO of Vasaloppet, who commissioned the study together with the three Vasaloppet municipalities, in an interview with Siljannews.

Money flows back into the local economy

In addition, the associations working during the Vasaloppet Winter Week also receive money in return.

“Vasaloppet gives back SEK 25 million (approx. EUR 2.24 million) to the associations for the efforts made by various associations in connection with our events,” says Johan.

The survey was conducted as a web questionnaire after the Winter Week. Out of 7,759 people surveyed, 1,993 responded — a response rate of 26 percent. During the event, spectators were also interviewed, and 661 responses were collected that way.

Orsa Grönklitt most popular for training

In the survey, 34 percent of all participants stated that they had attended a training camp ahead of their Vasaloppet Winter Week participation. Orsa Grönklitt emerged as the most popular location for pre-race training.

The list is topped by Grönklitt (19 percent), followed by Norway (17 percent), Sälen (12 percent), Mora (10 percent), and Älvdalen (including Idre and Särna) with 7 percent.

Compared to Eurovision in Malmö

Johan Eriksson believes the Vasaloppet can be compared to the 2015 FIS World Championships in Falun or Eurovision in Malmö in 2024. The key difference is that Vasaloppet achieves this every year.

“This survey places our impact on par with both Falun 2015 and Malmö last year. The difference is that we repeat this outcome annually. Compared to Malmö, we’re even slightly larger.”

Participants in the survey indicated that the most important factors for joining the Vasaloppet Winter Week were the high quality of the racecourses and the quality of the surrounding services.
