Sweden’s team to the 30-kilometer skate race at the Beijing Olympics features four strong women, including sprint specialist Jonna Sundling.

27-year-old sprint specialist Jonna Sundling is the main show among the four women in the Swedish team to the 30-kilometer skate race on Sunday.

Sweden announced lineup for the women’s 30-kilometer event on Friday, which is the final cross-country event at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing.

The pressure is on Sundling
Sweden’s national team director Anders Byström is excited to see what the four racers can accomplish in the final and longest of the women’s cross-country events at the 2022 Olympics.

However, Byström has particularly high expectations for Jonna Sundling, who has bagged a medal in each event she has raced so far at the Beijing Winter Games: She won the sprint on February 8, earned the silver medal in the team sprint along with Maja Dahlqvist on Wednesday, and helped Sweden to the bronze medal in the relay on Sunday.

“I am super excited to let these four racers loose on the course, particularly considering Jonna Sundling’s performance so far during these Olympics. It will be exciting to see what she can accomplish in a 30-kilometer marathon,” Byström says of the 27-year-old sprint specialist.

Brutal Competion
Conditions are expected to be brutal: frigid temperatures combined with high altitude and a grueling course make the 30-kilometer in Zhangjiakou one of the most demanding skate marathons ever.

“The team selection is based on an overall assessment of the racer’s fitness and condition at this point, and recovery is a major part of the decision,” says Byström.

The Swedish team will face a strong field in the 30-kilometer on Saturday, where the Russian and Norwegian skiers are among the top contenders to the medals.

The women’s 30-kilometer skate race is a mass start event, and takes place at 7:30 am on Sunday, February 20. Check out the start lists and race details
