Latvia welcomes 18 nations for the Madona Roller Ski World Cup and Junior World Championships

The first roller skiing World Cup in Latvia was held in 2004 in Priekuli, and this year, Madona is set to host the eleventh consecutive World Cup stage, as well as the Junior World Championships. Set to start on July 17, the stage is set for athletes from around the globe to embark on a fierce quest for glory in the Madona World Cup and Junior World Championships on roller skis. 

The Madona Roller Ski World Cup and Junior World Championships program features a series of races that will captivate fans and challenge athletes. On Thursday, July 17, the competition will start with the individual start race in classic technique, featuring a 10-kilometer event for men, women, junior men, and junior women.

The team sprint in the freestyle technique will take place on Friday, July 18. The excitement continues Saturday, July 19, with the 200-meter freestyle super sprint for all athletes. 

Finally, on Sunday, July 20, the event will culminate with the mass start race in freestyle technique. Athletes will battle it out over a 20-kilometer distance for men and women, while junior women and junior men will face a challenging 14-kilometer distance.

“Thanks to the professionalism of the local organizers, this stage has become one of the highlights of the World Cup calendar,” says Mārtiņš Niklass, Chair of the FIS Roller Ski Subcommittee, in a press release.

According to the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), athletes from 18 countries have signed up for the roller ski competitions at the “Smeceres sils” track and the streets of Madona city.

“I’m proud that the season starts here in Madona. Year after year, this event has served as a great platform for our athletes—offering them the chance to compete at home and gain international experience,” says race organizer and “Smeceres sils” track manager Gunārs Ikaunieks, and adds:

“It’s a testament to our long-term efforts and organizational standards. Events like this strengthen our ability to host even larger competitions in the future. I encourage everyone to come to Madona, get inspired, and cheer for athletes in this important pre-Olympic season.”
