Frida Karlsson recently revealed that she has found a new partner. Now the Swedish ski star is sharing new thoughts about her career and future.

On Tuesday, Frida Karlsson received the Victoria Prize for her performance at the Milano-Cortina Olympics, where she won two gold medals and a relay silver.

It was there, at the prestigious award ceremony on Öland, that the 26-year-old confirmed she and Swedish actor Simon Lööf are in a relationship.

Karlsson, who was previously in a relationship with national team skier William Poromaa, said at the time that she and Lööf had been together “for a while.”

Now the Swedish ski star is also opening up about her thoughts on her skiing career going forward.

“I love my life”

Frida Karlsson stated back in 2024 that she planned to retire after the World Championships on home soil in Falun in 2027, even though she will be only 27 years old after next year’s Worlds.

Since then, she has won two World Championship gold medals and two Olympic gold medals, and this past winter she left the door slightly open to extending her career.

“I am super excited about this season. I love my life, training and developing as a skier. And I really enjoy it,” Karlsson told SVT.

Nevertheless, the coming winter could still be her last.

Asked directly whether she will retire after Falun 2027, Karlsson said: “I still think so.”

But after her Olympic success, Karlsson is honest that she is open to changing her mind.

“I am going to have a new meeting with myself after the season,” she said.

Karlsson is, however, crystal clear about what it would take for her to continue beyond next season.

“If I continue my skiing career after that, it will be because I truly want to, and not because it is something I ‘have to’ or that is expected of me,” Karlsson said.

“Then it will truly come from the heart, and it will feel even more genuine.”

Towards a generational shift

Sweden has dominated international women’s cross-country skiing for years, but a generational shift is underway.

Several of the biggest stars have said they are considering retirement after the 2027 World Championships in Falun, including Moa Ilar and Maja Dahlqvist. Following this past winter’s Olympic season, Jonna Sundling and Linn Svahn have also spoken publicly about their future plans.

Medal factory

Despite being only 26 years old, Frida Karlsson has already cemented herself as one of the truly great names in international cross-country skiing.

She has won four Olympic medals and 13 World Championship medals. Of the 109 World Cup races she has entered, she has stood on the podium 37 times, won 18, and also claimed the Tour de Ski overall title in 2023.
