The 100-kilometer long-distance race in Mosetertoppen will be a challenge. In addition, a different points table for the Ski Classics Grand Finale Janteloppet will be in place compared to other Pro Tour events, and it’s the last chance for Pro Teams to secure a position in the top 25 in the Pro Team competition.

On December 9, 2023, the Ski Classics Pro Tour started in Austria at Bad Gastein. On Saturday, Season XV will come to an end with Janteloppet.

Petter Northug, Team Janteloppet, who is behind the event, a competition concept that has existed for a few years. The main race has been a 20-kilometer race in free style technique. But for this winter, Janteloppet expanded its horizons by joining the prestigious Ski Classics Pro Tour calendar for the much-anticipated season finale.

The event is a unique 100-kilometer long-distance lapping challenge with 1.730 meters of total ascent.

With a different points table for the season’s final event, the winner gets 200 points as the other non-Grand Classics, but the lower positions get 199, 198, 197 points, and so on until the 100th place, which gives the skier 100 points. In addition, every athlete crossing the finish line gets 100 points. In other Pro Tour events, the difference in points is much higher. For example, fifth and tenth place in other 200-point events gets 120 and 85 points, respectively. At the Grand Finale, skiers get 196 and 191 points, respectively.

During the 100 kilometers, sprint, and team sprint points will also be awarded at two checkpoints.

“We want a Grand Finale focusing more on the Pro Team competition than individual performances. The ambition is for Janteloppet to feel more like the last stage of the Tour de France. But it is a significant event and important to win,” said David Nilsson, Director of Ski Classics, during the Live Sessions this Wednesday.

Pro Team Competition

The top 25 Pro Teams in the Pro Team competition Season XV secure a Pro Team License in next winter’s Ski Classics. The Pro Teams with overall results between 26th and 35th must apply for a new license for Season XVI. For those Pro Teams outside the top 25, Janteloppet is the last chance to guarantee a direct license for next season’s Ski Classics.

Grand Finale Concept

Ski Classics introduced the Grand Finale concept to conclude Season XV with unparalleled greatness. David Nilsson, Director of Ski Classics, shed light on this development:

“The Grand Finale concept aims to create an exciting and spectacular ending to the season. For Janteloppet, it involves a looping course with various sprints and other elements that transform the event into a captivating show rather than a traditional ski race,” Nilsson explains and added:

“The inspiration for this concept draws from the iconic finish on the Champs-Élysées in the Tour de France, adding a similar level of spectacle and grandeur.”

The Season XV of Ski Classics Pro Tour consists of 15 events on 11 event weekends in 6 different countries. The season started in Bad Gastein, Austria, on December 9, 2023, and will end in Norway with the 100km Ski Classics Grand Finale Janteloppet on April 13, 2024.
