Truls Gisselman made his international breakthrough last season, finishing seventh in the skiathlon at the Olympics. Now he is an ambassador for the home World Championships in Falun and dreams of a World Championship medal.

The surprising Olympic performance in Milano-Cortina has fueled Truls Gisselman’s ambitions.

“Everything fell into place. But there were things that could have gone even better. If you have a perfect day and great skis, it’s not far off. Then you can be in the mix for medals.”

Gisselman lives ten minutes from the World Championship arena and is within walking distance of the ski stadium, where the stands are now being constructed. He is also an ambassador for the championships, a prestigious role for the 25-year-old from Rehns BK, who has emerged somewhat in the shadow of more renowned male skiers Edvin Anger and William Poromaa.

“It feels like something big is about to happen,” he says.

Truls Gisselman aims for skiathlon and relay

The skiathlon is the main goal for the World Championships, but the relay is also appealing.

Gisselman skied the opening leg when Sweden won bronze in the World Championship relay in Trondheim two years ago. He prefers to ski the first or second leg again.

“I believe that classic style suits me just a bit better. That’s when I feel most confident on the first or second leg.”

Home advantage – a small edge

He believes that the home courses can give him a slight advantage.

“I recognize the downhill sections and curves. You can find areas where you can relax more than your competitors and maybe gain a few seconds.”

An individual World Championship medal is the ultimate dream, but finishing just off the podium is not a failure, according to Gisselman.

“Even if you finish fourth, you have to be satisfied if you’ve given it your all. If someone is better, that’s okay.
