Reigning Ski Classics Champion Andreas Nygaard set a new World Record for the marathon distance on a double poling machine on Friday afternoon.

“It’s fun to have slightly different sessions, and when it goes well, it’s extra fun,” says Nygaard after completing the feat.

The World Record attempt was carried out at the University of Tromsø, Norway, and documented and controlled according to regulations. Nygaard thus clocked a time of 2 hours, 28 minutes, and 10.4 seconds for the 42,195 kilometers, the equivalent of a marathon, on the SkiErg machine.

New and Different

Although Nygaard is used to double poling longer than 42 kilometers in long-distance skiing, he says it was still different to do it on the double poling machine.

“I felt good the whole time, but you never quite know if you’ll get a little bit or if you suddenly just ‘die,’ so it’s hard,” he says.

Therefore, Nygaard was still determining how to calculate his power, especially toward the end.

“I may have started a little early in the final sprint, but I think it was good in terms of the final time, so I felt insanely good for about 30 kilometers, so then I thought that now I have to start pushing. But it was hard; it requires quite a few extra watts to slow down time. But it was fun,” concludes Nygaard.

The upcoming Ski Classics Pro Tour event is Pustertaler Ski Marathon, a 62km classic technique event in Italy on January 14, followed by Prato Piazza Mountain Challenge, a 30km race also in Italy on January 15, 2023.
