Jizerská50 – A Unique Race In The Jizera Mountains

Jizerská50, the eighth stage of the Ski Classics Season XIV, is one of the biggest long-distance skiing races in Central Europe and the second Grand Classics event of the season.

The 50-kilometer long-distance race will occur on Sunday, February 12, 2023, in the Czech Republic. Its unique feel reminds many skiers of the sceneries of Scandinavian races combined with a European touch, bringing the best of both worlds.

Jizerská50 was established in the late 1960s when mountain climbers decided to organize a race in the area. The first race in 1968 had only 52 participants. Still, it grew into a welcoming festival for both local and international participants, who get a chance to experience an unforgettable adventure in the wilderness of the Jizera Mountains.

The event also honors 15 local mountain climbers who participated in the race in 1970 and four months later met their doom in the mountains of Peru when an avalanche hit their expedition.

A True Folkfest

The start and finish are in Bedřichov, a mountain village with a unique atmosphere enhanced by local delicatessen and beer. The organizers want to emphasize that Jizerská50 is a true ‘Folkfest’ where professional and recreational skiers stand side by side.

Besides the global audience brought by Ski Classics, the race is followed by millions of Czech viewers, making it one of the most popular sports events in the country.

More To Explore

Jizerská50 is an accessible event as Prague is only a two-hour drive away, and the 2009 FIS Nordic Ski World Championships host city Liberec is only about 10km from the event area.

Liberec is a great place to stay while participating in the race, as there are many great Czech-style restaurants around the city and many sights to see. Some attractions are the City Zoo, the Botanical Garden, the Town Hall, the Liberec Castle, and the Jěstěd Tower, which has become the city’s symbol.

It is also recommended to visit the Centrum Babylon, an extraordinary congress and entertainment complex with a large water park, an amusement park, a casino, a shopping court, and a hotel.
