HISTORY
Jizerská50 was established in the late 1960s when mountain climbers decided to organize a race in the area. The first race in 1968 had only 52 participants. Still, it grew into a welcoming festival for local and international participants, who experience an unforgettable adventure in the wilderness of the Jizera Mountains.
The event also honors 15 local mountain climbers who participated in the race in 1970 and four months later met their doom in the mountains of Peru when an avalanche hit their expedition.
A TRUE FOLKFEST
The start and finish are in Bedřichov, a mountain village with a unique atmosphere enhanced by local delicatessen and beer. The organizers want to emphasize that Jizerská50 is a true ‘Folkfest’ where professional and recreational skiers stand side by side.
In addition to the global audience brought by Ski Classics, the event is followed by millions of Czech viewers, making it one of the most popular sports events in the country.
MORE TO EXPLORE
Jizerská50 is an accessible event. Prague is only a two-hour drive away, and the 2009 FIS Nordic Ski World Championships host city, Liberec, is only about 10km from the event area.
Liberec is a great place to stay while participating in the race. There are many great Czech-style restaurants around the city and many sights to see. Some attractions are the City Zoo, the Botanical Garden, the Town Hall, the Liberec Castle, and the Jěstěd Tower, which has become the city’s symbol.
THE SECOND GRAND CLASSICS SEASON XVI
Jizerská50 is the second Grand Classics event this season. The Grand Classics are the four largest and most prestigious events in Ski Classics: Marcialonga, Jizerská50, Vasaloppet, and Birkebeinerrennet. The skier that wins all four events in the same season completes a Grand Slam.
During Season XI, the Grand Classics events and the Grand Slam were introduced in Ski Classics. The concept was an immediate success and great motivation among the best Pro Team athletes of Ski Classics. Nobody has completed a Grand Slam in the history of long-distance skiing, but it might happen in Season XVI.
If you win all four Grand Classics, Marcialonga, Jizerská50, Vasaloppet, and Birkebeinerrennet, in the same season, you complete a Grand Slam.
