Last year, ProXCskiing.com created a guide for those starting their roller ski season, helping you choose the right roller skis, whether you’re a beginner or a more experienced skier. Ahead of the 2025 summer training season, the guide has been updated with more manufacturers.

The roller ski guide was developed in collaboration with ten of the most well-known roller ski manufacturers, each of whom had the opportunity to select three pairs of roller skis from their range. Each pair is recommended depending on the skier’s level and technique. The manufacturers who participated last year were also given the chance to update their recommendations.

The roller ski guide consists of three parts: classic roller skis for beginners, classic roller skis for experienced skiers, and skate roller skis.

Part 1: Classic Roller Skis for Beginners

Has the winter left you wanting more, and are you already eager to get started with roller ski training? Here’s the guide for those about to buy their first pair of roller skis.

First and foremost, there are three important things to keep in mind when buying roller skis. Former World Champion Ragnar Bragvin Andresen explains: “Stability, the right wheels, and secure bindings are the primary things to keep track of. This applies to everyone, both beginners and more experienced skiers.”

Stability

“It’s important to find a stable roller ski. The lower the center of gravity and the closer to the ground, the more stable and ‘ski-like’ it will feel to ride.”

It’s important to buy roller skis that match the person who will use them, especially if you’re buying them for someone else.

“There’s a reason junior models are made. I often see well-meaning parents buying the most expensive, high-tech roller skis for their kids. But that’s not always the best for an eight-year-old. When someone starts roller skiing—regardless of age—it’s important that the skis feel stable and secure, so the user dares to push themselves. That’s when real progress happens,” says Bragvin Andresen.

The Right Wheels

Most roller skis come with wheels that work well for a wide range of users. But Bragvin Andresen emphasizes that large, heavy skiers have higher demands.

“Heavier skiers—those over 70–75 kg—need wheels made of harder materials than those typically supplied as standard,” he says, and explains further:

“It’s a matter of safety. At high speeds, skis with soft wheels may lose grip during turns and lateral movements. But it’s also about power transfer. Heavier skiers using soft wheels may feel like their power is lost, especially in skate skiing.”

Secure bindings

Roller skis must be safe: Make sure the bindings aren’t too old or worn out. Bragvin Andresen understands that people inherit or buy used roller skis but urges extra caution when it comes to bindings. Bindings wear out over time, and there have been cases of manufacturing defects where bindings didn’t function properly and even released during use. At high speeds and in traffic, that’s clearly dangerous. So, it’s important to check that the bindings are secure.

“A good way to test the bindings is to ensure there’s no looseness when you’ve locked in the ski and then shake your foot forcefully in all directions,” says Bragvin Andresen.

Part 2: Classic Roller Skis for Experienced Skiers

For more experienced skiers, many of the same rules apply as for beginners when buying roller skis: stability, the right wheels, and secure bindings. However, experienced skiers may want to use different types of roller skis to optimize their training depending on the workout or terrain.

First of all, when is someone considered an “experienced” skier?

“Simply put: when you feel comfortable with turning and braking.”

What should experienced skiers look for when buying roller skis?

“The first step is to find the right ski for its intended use, whether it’s double poling on roads, classic skiing with diagonal stride on varied roller ski tracks, or skate skiing. The next step is choosing the correct rolling resistance and wheel type.”

Roller Skis for Different Purposes

Double poling on the road

Roller skiing on paved roads often involves varying asphalt quality. That’s why it’s important to choose a roller ski that offers comfort.

“A frame with a bit of flex helps absorb vibrations from the surface. The same goes for slightly softer wheels,” says Bragvin Andresen, and adds:

“Check what the long-distance pros are using. They spend long hours and a lot of training time on roller skis.”

Here, stability is key, since there are no ski tracks to follow like in winter.

Correct rolling resistance and wheel type

For experienced skiers, it’s often beneficial to have wheels with different levels of rolling resistance. Wheels are classified from 1 to 4, where wheel 1 offers the least resistance and wheel 4 the most.

Roller skis usually come with standard type 2 wheels. If you want more resistance, you can switch to type 3 or 4 wheels. If you want more speed and less resistance, choose type 1 wheels. “If you have the opportunity, I recommend varying the rolling resistance. It adds extra stimulation to your training sessions. After all, conditions in winter aren’t always the same either,” says Bragvin Andresen.

Classic skiing Bragvin Andresen recommends type 3 wheels as standard for well-trained skiers. For younger skiers and recreational athletes with less training experience, type 2 wheels are appropriate.

Which frame material should you choose?

There are roller skis made of aluminum, carbon fiber, fiberglass, and wood core. “You can perform well on roller skis made of any material, but it’s important to consider weight. If you’re big and heavy, aluminum is the safest option,” says the former roller ski World Champion.

Part 3: Skate Roller Skis

When it comes to skate roller skis, the skier’s weight is crucial in choosing the right skis.

“A light skier can basically choose roller skis made of any material and will, for example, experience a carbon frame as responsive and springy. However, for a heavier skier, this will be entirely wrong. A frame with too much flex will feel like skiing in quicksand where all the power just disappears. In this case, an aluminum rollerski is the best choice,” says Bragvin Andresen.

“If you look around, you will see that some elite skiers use carbon, but many others use aluminum.”

He highlights another advantage of aluminum: it’s an extremely robust material that can withstand a lot of wear, bumps, and shocks. “You can also get more flex and responsiveness by using softer wheels,” says Bragvin Andresen.

Correct Rolling Resistance and Wheel Type
For skating, standard wheels (level 2) work well for most people as training wheels.

“Few people benefit from experimenting with heavier wheels like level 3 in skating. The benefits of increased rolling resistance are few, but the risk of constantly having too much muscle load is that you become slow. After all, no one trains to get better at skiing slowly,” says Bragvin Andresen.

However, he sees good effects from varying with faster wheels (level 1). “It’s fun and beneficial to have a pair with fast wheels to train technique and skills at top speed. It’s also good to give the muscles a different stimulus.”
