The 29-year-old won five medals at the Olympics, the sprint title, and finished second in the overall World Cup standings. Now he has made an unexpected announcement following a grueling winter season.

Sturla Holm Lægreid has made a decision that he shared with his followers on social media.

“Hello everyone! I have decided to leave social media, but before that, I want to thank everyone who has followed and supported me. It has been a journey. Thank you!”

The 29-year-old from Bærum has over 83,000 followers on his Instagram account.

Confession on Live TV

Lægreid faced a massive media storm during the Winter Olympics after he confessed to infidelity during a live interview with NRK following his medal win in the opening event.

“And there is one person I wanted to share this with, who might not be watching today. Six months ago, I met the love of my life, the most beautiful person in the world, and three months ago, I made my biggest mistake and was unfaithful to her,” Lægreid told NRK after winning the normal distance medal at the Olympics.

In the aftermath, he faced intense media scrutiny from both national and major international outlets. His ex-girlfriend also spoke out against Lægreid following his shocking revelation.

“I did not choose to be put in this position, and it is painful to have to endure. We have been in contact, and he is aware of my opinions on this,” she told VG.

Exhausted

Lægreid won five medals out of five possible at the Olympics. However, after the championship in February, he felt so exhausted that he struggled to eat or sleep at times following the infidelity revelation, leading up to the World Cup finale in Holmenkollen at the end of March. Nevertheless, he secured seven consecutive World Cup victories after the Olympics and also won the overall sprint World Cup title.
