Finnish endurance athlete and journalist Teemu Virtanen has set a new World Record by roller skiing 601km continuously around Estonia without sleep, becoming the first person ever to complete a continuous roller ski journey of more than 600km on public roads.

Virtanen’s active skiing time was 33 hours, 33 minutes and 3 seconds, excluding mandatory support and safety breaks. The entire challenge took just over 40 hours from start to finish.

The two-time Guinness World Record holder in 24-hour cross-country skiing described the feat as the toughest physical challenge of his career.

“This was the toughest physical challenge of my life — even harder than my 24-hour skiing world record attempts. At the same time, it was a unique adventure unlike anything I have ever experienced. The closest comparison would probably be skiing across Finland, but during that expedition I was able to sleep between stages. This time, the journey continued for more than 40 hours without sleep.”

The conditions tested Virtanen throughout. Heavy rain struck during the night, strong headwinds made large sections of the second day a grind, and the final kilometers were completed in complete darkness.

“The conditions threw everything at us. During the night, we had heavy rain, the second day brought long stretches of strong headwinds, and I skied the final tens of kilometers in complete darkness, relying purely on determination. Once again, I learned a great deal about myself, and I’m proud that I managed to fight through every obstacle and reach the finish.”

Alongside the sporting challenge, the project was designed to showcase Estonia as a travel destination. Visit Estonia partnered in the initiative, with the route taking Virtanen through some of the country’s most distinctive landscapes, cities, and regions.

Virtanen was not alone on the road. His son, Neo-Vilmeri Virtanen, traveled alongside the journey, exploring the Estonian towns of Mustvee, Tartu, Viljandi, and Pärnu while also serving as part of the support crew. For Teemu, that presence made the achievement all the more meaningful.

“I would like to thank my entire support team, our partners, Visit Estonia, the local people who cheered us on, my film crew, and above all my son Neo-Vilmeri, who stayed by my side until the very end. It was a crazy idea — but that’s exactly what made it so special.”

The entire journey was filmed and will be developed into a television program documenting both the world record attempt and the father-and-son adventure across Estonia. The project is also intended as the first in a broader series of international endurance and adventure productions.

With the record now in the books, Virtanen is already thinking about what comes next.

“Now it’s time to catch my breath for a moment, but my thoughts are already turning toward new adventures. The next big dream may well take me to the land of kangaroos.”
