Vasaloppet is a major goal for many skiers each season, and the highly anticipated Vasaloppet Winter Week 2025 is set to take place from February 21 to March 2 in Sweden.

The event will culminate with the 101st edition of Vasaloppet, the world’s largest cross-country ski race. With 14 races on the program, thousands of participants from around the world will once again challenge themselves along the historic trails between Sälen and Mora. In a press release, Vasaloppet released all the facts and statistics for 2025.

Vasaloppet Winter Week 2025: By the Numbers

Vasaloppet’s Winter Week continues to be a truly global event, attracting skiers from all over the world. As of February 17, more than 54.000 participants from 66 nations have registered, and the total number is expected to surpass 57.000 before race day.

  • Skiers from all 21 counties in Sweden and 65 other countries will participate.
  • The oldest registered skier is 90 years old, while the youngest is just 7.
  • 60.8% of participants are men, and 39.2% are women.
  • 36.5% of participants are first-timers, while 63.5% have competed in previous editions.
  • 301 skiers are Vasaloppet veterans, having completed the race or equivalent events at least 30 times.
  • The combined distance skied by all participants is estimated to be 3.086.750km.

Sweden dominates the participant list, but several nations have strong representation:

  • Norway – 1.912 participants
  • Denmark – 835
  • Finland – 817
  • Germany – 575
  • Czech Republic – 369
  • Netherlands – 213
  • Switzerland – 196
  • Italy – 187
  • France – 168
  • Austria – 150

A Race Steeped in Tradition

Since its inception in 1922, over 1.8 million skiers have crossed the finish line in Mora, making Vasaloppet not just a race but a historical and cultural institution. The event is organized as a non-profit by IFK Mora and Sälens IF, with a mission to promote public health and outdoor sports.

Beyond the Ski Trails: Nutrition and Sustainability

Vasaloppet is known for its famous blueberry soup, a staple at aid stations along the course. In 2024, skiers consumed:

  • 30.700 liters of blueberry soup
  • 40.300 liters of sports drink
  • 9.800 liters of vegetable broth
  • 2.800 liters of coffee
  • 160.000 Vasaloppet buns
  • 450.000 paper cups (all recycled)

Registration Still Open

While Vasaloppet itself is fully booked with 15.800 participants, other races still have available spots, though Öppet Spår Sunday is nearing full capacity. Registration remains open until race day. Read more about how registration works.

Looking Ahead: Summer Week 2025

The Vasaloppet experience is not limited to winter. So far, 10.200 participants have already signed up for Vasaloppet’s Summer Week, featuring mountain biking and running races. Additionally, 282 participants are committed to the Vasaloppstrippeln, where they will ski, bike, and run their chosen distance (30, 45, or 90km) throughout the year.
