The World Championships 2025 continues this Wednesday in Trondheim, Norway, with the Team Sprint in classic technique for women. Who will win gold?

Trondheim World Championships – Team Sprint Classic

The Swedish women have the best sprint team on the circuit, and the team sprint is an event that suits them perfectly. With Jonna Sundling, they are aiming for their fourth straight gold.

It’s hard to see who can challenge Sundling & co today.

About the Team Sprint

The team sprint is quite a new distance at the World Championships. It came on the program in 2005 when Norway won the first time. They have three golds in team sprint, but Sweden has four. And the Swedes have dominated the last period by winning the three last ones.

Other winners are Finland and the USA.

The format is different this time. Before, they had semifinals run like the final, but they were often quite boring, and now they race individually in the qualification. There are two athletes in each team and the times are added together. The 15 best times qualify for the final.

The final starts with a mass start of the first athlete in each of the 15 teams. After one lap, they change to the second in the team. Both are racing three times in the final.

You need both endurance and speed in this event. It’s tricky with the breaks when you often see the athletes sitting on a bike to keep their bodies in action. And it is hard to do three sprints after each other’s in a final.

FORMER WORLD CHAMPIONS

  • 2005     Norway, (Hilde Gjermundshaug Pedersen, Marit Bjørgen)
  • 2007     Finland, (Riitta-Liisa Roponen, Virpi Kuitunen)
  • 2009     Finland, (Aino-Kaisa Saarinen, Virpi Kuitunen)
  • 2011     Sweden, (Ida Ingemarsdotter, Charlotte Kalla)
  • 2013     USA, (Jessica Diggins, Kikkan Randall)
  • 2015     Norway, (Ingvild Flugstad Østberg, Maiken Caspersen Falla)
  • 2017     Norway, (Heidi Weng, Maiken Caspersen Falla)
  • 2019     Sweden, (Stina Nilsson, Maja Dahlqvist)
  • 2021     Sweden, (Maja Dahlqvist, Jonna Sundling)
  • 2023     Sweden, (Emma Ribom, Jonna Sundling)

FAVORITES

SWEDEN

Very much the same situation as the Norwegians on the men’s side. Three straight wins and Jonna Sundling and Maja Dahlqvist as a team. The morale is high in the Swedish team after a good start in Trondheim, and they have the best team here.

NORWAY

With the support of the enormous crowd in Granåsen, they will probably be a hot tip for a medal. But it will be hard to beat Sweden. Norway won this distance the last time in Lahti, Finland, in 2017.

SWITZERLAND

A surprise in Trondheim. Nadine Fähndrich won bronze in the individual sprint together with Anja Weber. They could be on the podium in the World Championships this Winter.

OUTSIDERS

GERMANY

Surprised the Swedes at the Olympics in Beijing. But there are question marks about the form of some of the stars. Have the Germans hit top form in Trondheim? We remember how Victoria Carl won her first World Cup here last Winter, and we are not ready to take them away from the favorites.

FINLAND

Jasmi Joensuu has been the best sprinter for most of the season, even though she hasn’t won the World Cup. They are far from as strong as the Swedes, but Finland is one of the countries that generally like classic better than skating.

USA

What has happened with the American team? Diggins left out the 10km and has been a shadow of the form she showed in Falun a couple of weeks ago. She said the skis were bad, but her foot has also been a problem in classic. So, a repeat of the gold from Val di Fiemme in 2013 is unlikely.
