“Skistad could be left out of the Olympic team”

There was more at stake than World Cup points for the two Norwegian women battling for the podium in the team sprint in Davos.

Just two tenths of a second separated Norway’s two anchor skiers in Friday evening’s team sprint final in Davos, making the Olympic team selection even more complicated.

The Swedes, however, were untouchable. Maja Dahlqvist opened a gap on her final leg and sent Jonna Sundling into the anchor leg with a lead of around 20 meters.

That made it clear that the rest of the field was fighting for second place. The battle turned into a thriller between the two Norwegian anchor skiers, Mathilde Myhrvold and Kristine Stavås Skistad, who finished second and third, respectively.

“I stayed behind, the plan was to pass her at the end. But I became so stiff that I was barely able to stay on my feet. I had been stiff for quite a long time before the sprint,” Skistad told Viaplay after the final.

As a result, selecting the Norwegian Olympic team sprint lineup has become even more challenging. Based on the results so far this season, it is not a given that Stavås Skistad will be part of that team.

“We didn’t get a clear answer today. I’m not saying she’s not good enough, but she didn’t really kick the door in for an Olympic team sprint spot here. It should be said that Val di Fiemme is at a lower altitude. Altitude is probably a disadvantage for Skistad when you arrive directly at elevation like this. On the other hand, the Olympic course is tougher,” said NRK expert commentator Torgeir Bjørn after the team sprint.

“So, the selection question remains. It’s not guaranteed that Stavås Skistad will race the team sprint at the Olympics, but she is of course a very strong candidate,” he added.
