Scott Patterson retires from World Cup ski racing
Scott Patterson, a revered figure in the world of cross-country skiing, has officially declared his retirement from World Cup ski racing, marking the end of a remarkable journey that spanned multiple Winter Olympic Games and World Championships. Hailing from Anchorage, Alaska, Patterson became an indispensable US cross-country ski team member.
Patterson’s World Cup career trajectory began seven years ago, with his debut on the World Cup stage in Nove Mesto, Czech Republic. Chris Grover, Program Director of the US cross-country ski team, lauded Patterson’s invaluable contributions, emphasizing his role as a linchpin in the American men’s distance team. Grover praised Scott Patterson’s ability to consistently deliver stellar performances in championship races and his exemplary leadership within the team.
“Scott has been the linchpin of our American men’s distance team for the last two Olympic cycles,” said Grover in a press release from the US Ski and Snowboard, and added:
“He’s been the guy we look to in a Championship 30km or 50km, and he has consistently delivered. Scott’s ability to build momentum in fitness and performance through the season and be healthy and ready to deliver results at the big races has always been impressive. Beyond the performances, Scott has been a model of quiet leadership on the team, demonstrating daily his professionalism and determined approach to training, recovery, and balancing athletics with a career. Scott is a great athlete and an incredible human being. Although he will be sorely missed on the World Cup tour, something tells me we’ll be getting passed by him regularly on the mountain trails and the ski tracks.”
During his illustrious career, Patterson amassed an impressive record, with 116 World Cup starts, appearances in two Winter Olympic Games, and participation in three World Championships. His achievements include 12 Super Tour victories, six US National Championships titles, and multiple top 10 finishes in both World Championships and World Cup events.
Notably, Patterson was part of the historic mixed relay team that secured the first-ever mixed relay victory in 2022.
Reflecting on his career, Patterson highlighted his resilience in overcoming challenges, including injuries and illnesses, and expressed pride in his balanced lifestyle, encompassing both athletic pursuits and professional endeavors as an engineer. Kristen Bourne, D team coach of the US cross-country ski team, echoed praise for Patterson’s determination and work ethic, underscoring his status as one of the finest American distance skiers.
“Scott is retiring having been one of the best American distance skiers we’ve ever had,” said Kristen Bourne, and added:
“Not only has he had success at the highest level of the sport, but he’s also been a pivotal role model for the athletes on the team. Scott is among the most determined and diligent people I’ve ever met. He will be the guy who finishes a 50km race and almost always wishes it were longer. He loves the grind and the hard challenges that come with it. We’re going to miss having Scott on the road, but we know his success outside of skiing has already started and will continue for many years to come.”
In a candid Q&A session, Patterson shared insights into his career, emphasizing the importance of resilience, adaptability, and finding balance in life. He expressed gratitude for the clarity and purpose that ski racing provided, citing it as a driving force behind his success. Patterson also offered advice to aspiring athletes, encouraging them to pursue diverse interests outside of sports and to prioritize personal growth alongside athletic achievements.
