The FIS Council has voted to award the 2031 Nordic World Ski Championships to Oberstdorf, Germany, with the German city beating out Planica, Slovenia, in a 16-to-6 vote.

Oberstdorf will host the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in 2031. The decision was made on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, by the FIS Council in what was its first fully-fledged meeting since the body’s election at the 57th FIS Congress in Belgrade in June.

The vote had originally been scheduled to take place in Belgrade on the eve of the Congress but was postponed to this week’s council session. When it came to a vote, Oberstdorf’s candidature prevailed convincingly over Planica, receiving 16 of the 22 votes cast.

“The Council was happy to be able to discuss frankly and openly today before making such an important decision. I wish to congratulate Oberstdorf for what was a remarkable candidature from one of the landmark locations for Nordic skiing in the world,” said FIS President Alexander Ospelt in a press release.

The next International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) Council meeting is scheduled for September 1 and 2 at FIS headquarters in Oberhofen am Thunersee, Switzerland.
