Kardin and Fleten dominate season premiere in long-distance skiing
Edsåsdalen in Sweden provided a sunny long-distance skiing debut with a 45-kilometer course. Skiers completed six laps on a 7.5-kilometer circuit in a truly winter landscape. Among the participants were last year’s Vasaloppet winner Emilie Fleten, Team Ramudden, and Ski Classics Youth bib winner Karolina Hedenström.
According to Langd.se, it took Fleten one lap to shake off her competitors. Karolina Hedenström managed to keep up the longest but had to let the Norwegian go towards the first lap. Hedenström held off the rest of the field and secured second place. Linnea Johansson, Lager 157 Ski Team, claimed third.
“I got a bit sick after coming home from the training camp in Tenerife; it was surely a big shock for the body to suddenly return to the cold again. But I think the form is starting to come, and I believe this race did me good,” said Fleten in an interview during Lager 157 Ski Team’s live broadcast after the race.
The men, like the women, completed a 7.5-kilometer lap for six laps. On the starting line was last season’s dominant skier Emil Persson, Lager 157 Ski Team.
Several skiers initially kept up with the men’s pack, but halfway through, it was Lager 157 Ski Team duo Torleif Syrstad and Oskar Kardin at the front. They stuck together in the following laps and were decided as Kardin increased the pace on the final lap, and Syrstad had to let go of his teammate and Lager 157 Ski Team’s recruit. Nils Dahlsten claimed third place after a strong finish.
“It felt good all the way, really. And the fact that we could achieve a triple feels very satisfying,” said Kardin about Lager 157 Ski Team’s triple win in the premiere.
The second-place finisher in the race was also pleased with the result.
“I had a good feeling; it was like the first ski race, so nice to get it over with. But Oskar was in a slightly different league today,” said Syrstad in an interview during Lager 157 Ski Team’s live broadcast after the race.
Emil Persson stopped the race and was not among the top six.
