Birkebeinerrennet: The last Grand Classics event of Season XVII
On Saturday, March 14, 2026, the Ski Classics Pro Tour heads to Norway for Event 10 – Birkebeinerrennet, a 54-kilometer long-distance race from Rena to Lillehammer. The event marks the final Grand Classics stage of Season XVII, promising another epic battle in one of the most picturesque races.
Birkebeinerrennet is a demanding course with an elevation gain of 1059 meters and the highest point at 906 meters above sea level. From the start in Rena, skiers face a relentless uphill section followed by stunning views across the Norwegian mountains before reaching the second climb. The race concludes with a fast descent to the finish line in Lillehammer’s Olympic stadium.
“Birkebeinerrennet is more than a ski race – it’s a tribute to strength, endurance, and historic courage. Every stride carries the legacy of those who bore the Royal Prince across the mountains in the year 1206. We are proud to be hosting one of the iconic races in the Ski Classics Season XVII,” says Jostein Buraas, CEO at Birkebeinerrennet.

An Event Rooted in History
First held in 1932, Birkebeinerrennet is named after the Birkebeiners, two warriors who carried the infant heir to the Norwegian throne, Prince Haakon, through harsh winter terrain during civil war times. To honor this tale, all participants must carry a 3.5kg backpack symbolizing the prince’s weight.
Beyond the competition, the route offers breathtaking scenery and historical depth, capturing the spirit of long-distance skiing at its purest. From the rustic town of Rena, nestled near Norway’s largest military camp, to the Olympic heritage and cultural offerings of Lillehammer, the atmosphere around the event is unique.
Lillehammer itself is rich with attractions, from the Norwegian Olympic Museum and Maihaugen open-air museum to lake views and traditional wooden houses, making it an ideal destination for visitors and spectators alike.
Birkebeinerrennet is not only a highlight of the Pro Tour but also a cultural landmark that brings together history, endurance, and the heart of Norwegian skiing.
