Are Finnish ski coaches too conservative?

Ski Classics and long-distance skiing are on the rise in Sweden and Norway, with the main channels broadcasting the races live in these countries. Astrid Øyre Slind, Alvar Myhlback, and many other skiers have shown that training and races for long-distance skiing can increase capacity and fitness levels, even for traditional distances.

However, Finnish coaches often see Ski Classics events as taxing races that detract from sensitivity and performance on shorter distances. This is something that Olli Tyrväinen, Team Edux Pro Team Director and an experienced Ski Classics Pro Team athlete, has encountered when recruiting athletes for his Pro Team.

Team Edux aims to elevate the level of Finnish long-distance skiing. Maastohiihto.com interviewed Olli Tyrväinen, discussing his team’s future, summarizing the past winter, and reflecting on Finnish skiing. He also emphasized the need for collaboration with major Swedish and Norwegian teams to change learning and attitudes in Finland.

“Athletes are not necessarily conservative, but coaches and support staff often are. They perceive these Ski Classics races and our training methods as too demanding. There are many good examples of how training and races in long-distance skiing can also positively impact traditional distances,” says Tyrväinen and adds:

“The success of Joonas Sarkkinen from our team last winter demonstrates this. He participated in Marcialonga and La Diagonela, and those races immediately improved his performance. He placed in the top ten four times in the Finnish Championships,” Olli stated, encouraging Finnish skiers to try Ski Classics races.
