On the 19th of January, Antarctic Logistics and Expeditions (ALE) hosted the inaugural Antarctic Loppet, marking the first-ever timed cross-country skiing events held in Antarctica.

This Antarctic event brought together skiers from around the globe, with eighteen participants representing eleven different nationalities taking part in 10K and 20K races.

As the first Ski Classics Challenger event held in Antarctica, the Antarctic Loppet adds a distinctive element to the Challenger family. The race offers skiers the chance to compete in one of the most remote settings on the planet.

The planned 50K race was canceled due to adverse weather conditions. “It was a difficult decision to cancel the 50K,” said Nick Lewis, Partner at ALE. “The risk of cold injury this far from definitive medical care meant we needed to take a prudent approach. Safety always comes first in such extreme environments.”

Honoring Antarctica’s Skiing Heritage

The Antarctic Loppet was designed to celebrate cross-country skiing’s role in the history of Antarctic exploration. Participants had the opportunity to ski in a setting deeply tied to polar history.

“The Antarctic Loppet was created to honor cross-country skiing’s role in the exploration of Antarctica,” Lewis said. “It was a special moment to hold an event that pays homage to such a pivotal aspect of polar history. This experience not only educated our guests but also allowed them to engage with this extraordinary continent in a truly unique way.”

Beyond the Races

In addition to the races, participants attended lectures about the history and geography of Antarctica and visited landmarks like Elephant’s Head, Charles Peak Windscoop, and Drake Icefall. These activities offered a broader experience for the competitors outside of the races.

The Future of the Antarctic Loppet

ALE has announced plans to expand the Antarctic Loppet for the 2025 season to include all three distances: 10K, 20K, and 50K. The races are tentatively planned for mid-December or early January when weather conditions are generally more favorable. Official dates will be announced by ALE later this year.

“Everyone agreed it was a total success, and all the skiers were extremely satisfied,” Lewis shared. “We are looking forward to building on this incredible start and creating an enduring legacy for cross-country skiing in Antarctica.”
