Swiss talent makes the switch from cross-country to biathlon
One of Switzerland’s most talented cross-country skiers is taking on a new challenge. Lea Fischer will compete in biathlon starting in the 2026/2027 season.
Fischer brings considerable World Cup pedigree to the switch, having made 73 starts on the cross-country World Cup circuit and represented Switzerland at the Olympic Games in February. After last season, she began exploring the possibility of changing disciplines and completed training courses with the Swiss biathlon World Cup group in May.

The trial period proved successful. “After this test phase, the Central Swiss athlete and the responsible coaching team agreed to continue on the chosen path,” Swiss-Ski said in a statement, confirming the move.
Fischer will prepare for the coming season with the women’s first training group and carries her A-squad status from cross-country into the new sport, a sign of the confidence Swiss-Ski has in her potential as a biathlete.

It is not the first time a Swiss cross-country skier has made this transition. Lydia Mettler (formerly Hiernickel), who made the same switch four years ago, finished twice inside the top 25 in the biathlon World Cup last season, a benchmark Fischer will no doubt have in mind as she picks up the rifle.
