The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed the Single Mixed Relay will join the Olympic biathlon program for the first time at Alpes 2030, where athletes will compete at Le Grand-Bornand in the French Alps.

Biathlon is getting bigger at the 2030 Winter Olympics. The IOC Executive Board announced on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, that the Single Mixed Relay will feature on the Olympic program for the first time at the French Alpes 2030 Games, bringing the total number of biathlon medal events to 12.

The format has been a fixture on the IBU World Cup circuit since 2015 and was introduced to the World Championships program in 2019. Its Olympic inclusion is the next step in a steady rise that has made it one of the most-watched events on the biathlon calendar.

“We are delighted that the Single Mixed Relay will debut at the Olympic Games at Alpes 2030. We are grateful to the IOC for this opportunity and excited to showcase the format in one of our sport’s most iconic biathlon venues,” said IBU President Olle Dahlin in a press release and added:

“The Single Mixed Relay first featured at a Biathlon World Championships in 2019 as part of our ongoing commitment to creating more engaging and broadcast-friendly formats. It has become one of the most exciting formats in the sport, capturing the thrill and unpredictability of biathlon while showcasing our women’s and men’s athletes’ excellence in the same field of play. Its place on the Olympic program will cement this position and give millions of people the chance to experience and enjoy its intensity and excitement for the very first time.”

The announcement came as part of a broader program update for Alpes 2030, which is set to be the first Winter Games to achieve full gender parity in athlete quota places. The overall program includes 126 medal events across all sports, with 3,046 athlete quota spots split nearly equally between women and men.
