The Biathlon Integrity Unit (BIU) has reached its conclusion in the case concerning the French biathlete convicted of fraud, and Julia Simon will not face further penalties.

The French biathlon star, who admitted in court to fraud and theft against national team colleague Justine Braisaz-Bouchet and members of the support staff, received her criminal sentence on October 24. Two weeks later, the French Ski Federation (FFS) issued a six-month suspension, of which five months are conditional, along with a financial penalty.

After the FFS decision, the BIU announced it would review the matter and consider whether additional sanctions were necessary. The unit has now completed its assessment and has concluded that the FFS handled the case appropriately. This was confirmed in a BIU statement published Friday morning.

“In line with its oversight role under the IBU Integrity Code, the BIU examined the FFS process and sanction. The BIU is satisfied that the matter has been handled within the domestic jurisdiction of the FFS and that the sanction imposed falls within the range available under national rules.

The BIU will not open separate proceedings under the IBU Integrity Code on this case. It will continue to monitor any broader issues within the team environment and remains prepared to act should new information arise that engages its jurisdiction.”

With this decision, Simon avoids further punishment. She will miss the World Cup opener in Östersund, starting Saturday, November 29, but may return to the French squad for the Hochfilzen World Cup from December 8 to 14.

A narrow escape

In court, Simon was handed a three-month suspended prison sentence and a €15,000 fine. The FFS suspension and fine take effect from November 7, 2025. This means the 29-year-old escapes with a comparatively mild competitive impact: the 2026 Olympic Winter Games remain a realistic target.

Since only one month of her suspension is unconditional, Simon will miss just the World Cup opening weekend in Östersund — three individual races.

With the BIU decision now final, Julia Simon is free to pursue qualification for the French team for Milano-Cortina 2026, taking place from February 6 to 22.
