The 27-year-old Norwegian biathlete Sivert Guttorm Bakken was confirmed deceased on December 23.

The Norwegian Biathlon Association has confirmed that Sivert Guttorm Bakken (27) from Lillehammer was found dead in his hotel room in Lavazè, Italy, according to information received from Italian authorities.

The cause of death is not known at this time.

“Our thoughts are first and foremost with Sivert’s family and everyone close to him. We are cooperating with the Italian authorities on site,” said Emilie Nordskar, acting Secretary General of the Norwegian Biathlon Association, in a press release.

Athletes and relatives will be followed up by crisis response teams and internal support resources. Bakken’s teammates have asked for peace and respect during this difficult period.

A public memorial service will be held at Lillehammer Church at 21:00 on Tuesday, with representatives from the local crisis team, clergy, and police in attendance.
