The World Cup season in cross-country skiing kicks off this weekend. It will do so without Victoria Carl. The same goes for the Olympics in February.

The German ski star has been suspended ever since the news broke at the end of June that she had tested positive for Clenbuterol, a substance on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) banned list.

The 29-year-old explained that she ingested the prohibited substance by mistake, through a cough syrup prescribed by her doctor, and that she did not know it contained the banned ingredient.

A decision has now been made in the case. The German Ski Association announced Tuesday afternoon that she is suspended from training and competition for the upcoming season. That means the Milano–Cortina Winter Olympics in February are out of the question.

“Has destroyed my Olympic dream”

The ski star is devastated.

“It has already been a tough period where I hoped for the best. It is still hard to accept that a moment of sloppy and incorrect medical treatment has now destroyed my Olympic dream,” Carl says.

“At the same time, I hope for a fair and appropriate decision that will at least allow me to continue my career,” she adds.

The German Ski Association writes that Carl experienced health problems in March during the Military World Championships, leading her doctor to prescribe a cough syrup. A subsequent doping test revealed the presence of a banned substance in the syrup.

The doctor in the German armed forces has taken responsibility.

Story developing.
