Women’s 30km Mass Start Classic Race – Preview

The women’s 30km in classic style at the World Championships in Planica is set to take place today, Saturday, March 4, and several countries are in contention for the title.

Sweden has yet to win this classic event at the World Championships but could potentially do so this year. Although they claimed bronze in 2015 (Charlotte Kalla) and in 2021 (Frida Karlsson), Ebba Andersson finished fourth in 2021. Karlsson and Andersson each won two classic style distance events during this World Cup season, at 10km and 20km.

Norway is the record holder in this event, having won it four times, including each of the last three editions. Marit Bjørgen won in 2013, and Therese Johaug in 2015 and 2021. Norway has won at least one medal in the women’s 30km classic style event in six of the seven years it has been on the program. The only exception was in 1999 when Hilde Glomsås finished in seventh place. Johaug, Bjørgen, and Finland’s Virpi Kuitinen are the only women who have won multiple medals in this event at the World Championships.

Other contenders include Finnish women who have claimed five podium finishes in classic style distance events during this season’s World Cup, with Kerttu Niskanen finishing fourth in four events and Krista Pärmäkoski finishing third in one event. Finland’s only medals in the 30km classic style at the World Championships were for Virpi Kuitunen, who won gold in 2007 and silver in 2005.

Katharina Hennig of Germany won the 15km classic style event in Val di Fiemme on January 7, and Teresa Stadlober of Austria could win the country’s second medal in a women’s cross-country event at the World Championships. Before this year, Maria Theurl’s bronze medal in the 15km freestyle event in 1999 was Austria’s only podium finish in a women’s event. The only German woman to have won medals in classic style distance events at the World Championships was Barbara Petzold

for East Germany, who won silver in the 10km event in 1974 and gold in the same event at the Winter Games in 1980.

Planica, Slovenia, is the place for this winter season’s World Championships, with ten competitions in 12 days and the last race being the men’s cross-country skiing 50km mass start race on March 5, 2023.
