Norwegian star announces retirement: “I’m following my heart”
Norwegian cross-country skiing star has announced her retirement from professional skiing. The 24-year-old, known for her powerful style and strong performances, shared the news in a heartfelt message on her social media channels.
“I have a somewhat bittersweet announcement to share. I’ve decided to retire,” Helene Marie Fossesholm wrote on her Instagram account.
“Over the past months, my motivation has gone up and down, but mostly down. I’ve always hoped this feeling was temporary, that the motivation would come back. I’ve tried to focus on the positive and spoken as if my motivation was high, but unfortunately, time hasn’t helped.”
Fossesholm reflected on her journey, emphasizing that happiness and joy have always been her priorities, even above results.
“I’ve always been a person who gives everything to what I do. When motivation no longer allows that, I don’t feel good about continuing. Enjoyment has always come before performance, and I believe that’s a key to success, at least for me,” Fossesholm wrote.
The Norwegian skier, who has been part of Norway’s national team setup and represented the country in several major championships, now looks forward to a new chapter outside competitive sport.
“Life is more than elite sports, and I’ve always had another dream beyond skiing. For many years, I’ve lived my dream through cross-country skiing, but now a different dream awaits me. After Christmas, I’ll start studying medicine, and I’m really looking forward to it,” Fossesholm said.
Throughout her career, Fossesholm achieved several highlights, including a World Championship medal in the relay, World Cup podiums, and multiple medals at the Junior and U23 World Championships. Her dynamic style and fearless approach made her one of Norway’s most promising young skiers in recent years.
In her retirement message, Fossesholm expressed her profound gratitude to those who supported her throughout her journey.
“Cross-country skiing is an individual sport, but I could never have enjoyed the path or achieved what I have without my family, friends, and partners who stood by me through ups and downs. A special thanks to my dad, who has been my coach for almost my entire life, and to my mom and brother, who, together with him, have always been there for me.”
Fossesholm concluded her message on a positive note, saying she feels content and at peace with her decision.
“I’m doing really well. I’m choosing to follow my heart and what’s best for me. Cross-country skiing will always be an important part of my life, just on a smaller scale. Thank you for the dance — it’s been fun! Now I look forward to living the ‘ordinary’ life,” she wrote.
