The Norwegian Ski Association confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that the Junior and U23 World Championships in Nordic disciplines, scheduled for March 3–8, 2026, will go ahead in Norway – but with a change of venue.

The move follows a significant financial deficit incurred after hosting the Nordic World Ski Championships in Trondheim this past winter, which left the Association uncertain about fulfilling its hosting obligations under the official Hosting Agreement with the International Ski & Snowboard Federation (FIS).

After constructive dialogue with FIS, the Norwegian Ski Association reached a solution it considers financially sustainable, with regional support playing a key role in making the Lillehammer event possible.

“For all those who are hopefully aiming for the top, this is a day of joy. The event is important for future recruitment, and is the big goal on the road for the juniors, both here at home and abroad,” said Norwegian Ski Association’s President Tove Moe Dyrhaug in a press release.

Approximately 700 athletes from over 45 nations are expected to compete in the championships.

Collaboration secures the event

There were no alternative host nations, making Norway’s commitment essential.

According to the Norwegian Ski Association, intense work has been conducted in recent weeks to review costs and revenues. Dialogue with Lillehammer organizers and local stakeholders has resulted in financial contributions from the region, ensuring the event’s feasibility.

“Here, organizers, local supporters, and the Ski Association have worked together to ensure implementation against a difficult financial backdrop. We are grateful that Lillehammer is participating, but we would also like to pay tribute to Trondheim for its good and constructive work,” said Acting Secretary General Ola Keul.

Keul also underlined Norway’s strong tradition of skilled organizers, highlighting the upcoming World Cup competitions in Trondheim in December.

While some details remain to be finalized, the decision provides clarity for athletes, teams, and FIS, ensuring that Norway will meet its obligations to host the Junior & U23 World Championships in 2026.
