Former Norwegian Ski Federation President Johan Baumann has passed away at the age of 91. He was a prominent figure in Norwegian skiing for many years and also a well-known politician in his hometown of Drammen.

Johan Baumann died on Thursday, July 16. He had a tremendous passion and commitment to skiing, which he demonstrated for many years. Baumann was present at skiing events as recently as this year. Furthermore, he served as Ski Federation President during a period when Norway transformed a disappointing Olympics in Calgary 1988 into successes in Albertville 1992 and Lillehammer 1994.

A highly versatile career

Baumann was active both as a cross-country skier and a dog sledder. He won the King’s Cup in dog sledding in 1955, 1956, 1957, 1959, and 1960, according to NRK.

He graduated from the Norwegian Military Academy and left the armed forces in 1972 as a major. He served as chairman of the Ski Association from 1972 to 1978 and as president of the Norwegian Ski Federation from 1987 to 1995. In the meantime, he also managed Bergans. Subsequently, he became an active member of the Conservative Party and served on the city council in Drammen from 1995 to 2019.
