Today’s 15km skiathlon for women and 30km for men at the Norwegian National Championships in Gjøvik had to be canceled. Cold weather forced the organizers to cancel the race.

The cold is why Saturday’s 15km skiathlon for women and 30km for men during the Norwegian National Championships in Gjøvik had to be canceled. 

The cold limit set by the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) is minus 18 degrees Celsius. At the National Championships tracks in Gjøvik, the temperature was colder than that.

“The jury took new temperature measurements on the tracks at Gjøvik. Just before 11:00 (CET), it was -23.1 degrees at the coldest point. The jury, therefore, decided to cancel today’s 15km skiathlon for women and 30km for men,” according to a press release from the Norwegian Ski Association.

“Although everything is in place for a brilliant festival here in Vind, the athletes’ health and safety will always come first, and it is, therefore, a completely correct decision,” says race director Ole Henrik Evensen.  

The Norwegian National Championships – part 1 – in Gjøvik is organized with a freestyle sprint on Thursday, an individual freestyle race on Friday, a skiathlon on Saturday, and a relay on Sunday.
