The Engadin La Diagonela is far more than a race – it’s an experience. Set in the heart of Switzerland’s Engadin valley, the country’s longest classic cross-country event takes skiers through postcard-perfect villages, frozen lakes, and into the romantic Val Roseg. From 15–18 January 2026, the 13th edition brings five races across three days – from the atmospheric night race La Saireda Roseg to the flagship 55 km La Diagonela.

But what makes this event so special? Few know it better than Kasper Stadaas (NOR), Team Aker Dæhlie, who claimed victory in 2022 and 2024. For him, La Diagonela stands out as one of the highlights of the Ski Classics season:

“La Diagonela is unique with its beautiful mountainous landscape combined with the course going through small villages like Pontresina, La Punt, and of course the special finish up into Zuoz.”

A Valley to Remember 

Stadaas especially treasures the part through Val Roseg:

“Val Roseg is a very nice part of the course. It’s a nice valley to look up into and very nice to ski down alongside the river into Pontresina.”

The route itself reminds him of Italy’s Marcialonga:

“The parcours has a lot of the same elements as Marcialonga. It has long flat sections, but also some hills to break up the rhythm. The finish in La Diagonela demands a lot of the same qualities you need to be good up to Cascata in Marcialonga.”

Atmosphere Like Nowhere Else 

Crossing the finish line in Zuoz’s narrow streets is something every skier remembers:

“Definitely a tough finish, and the narrow streets make it a bit nervous – but when you get to the town square and meet the crowds, it’s a great atmosphere that hits you.”

For Stadaas, La Diagonela is not only a competition – it’s an alpine pilgrimage:

“It’s more of an experience than a race, but at La Diagonela you get to do both, and you get rewarded afterwards with the endorphins of finishing a 55 km ski race.”

Tips for Scandinavian Skiers 

Why should Scandinavian skiers add La Diagonela to their calendar? 

“Implement the race in a week-long vacation if you can, so you can enjoy some easy skiing before and after the race. The weather is sunny and great compared to Scandinavia – you can even enjoy a coffee or a beer at a local café right next to the tracks.”

Personal Milestones & Future Goals 

Stadaas’ victories at La Diagonela have a special place in his career: 

“La Diagonela 2022 was my first-ever victory, so that will always be special. To have crossed that finish line first twice is something very special.”

And his motivation for the future? 

“I’m counting down the days! I missed last year’s race due to fever and Covid, so I am very motivated to return in 2026. The goal is to enjoy the atmosphere along the parcours and hopefully meet the same atmosphere in Zuoz.”
