Tjejvasan Becomes A Ski Classics Challengers Event

by Leandro Lutz • 27.12.2022
Tjejvasan is a 30km long-distance skiing event with only female skiers at the starting line. The event was first held in Sweden in 1988 and now joins the Ski Classics Challengers calendar for the upcoming edition on February 25, 2023.

The Ski Classics Challengers series was launched in 2019 as an addition to the Ski Classics Pro Tour. The Challengers series’ ambition is to connect and help promote the events and enhance the long-distance skiing sport in general. Tjejvasan represents a milestone for the project entering Ski Classics Challengers series as event number 50.

50 is also the maximum Challengers bonus points a Pro Team athlete may count in each season’s Yellow bib competition. From now on, SC Ranking points will be handed out from Tjejvasan to all participating skiers, including the recreational skiers.

SC Ranking calculates the best 12 results from the last 24 months; men and women are in the same ranking. The SC Ranking is used for seeding purposes in events, but also a fun way to compare yourself with friends and colleagues. Currently, #1 is Emil Persson, with 25,976,564 points, ahead of #2 Ida Dahl, with 25,398,489 points. On the other side of the table is #34225 ranked Laine Shipman from the USA with 126 points! “We’re proud to welcome Tjejvasan as the 50th Ski Classics Challengers event! Tjejvasan is one of the biggest cross-country ski races in the world, and the event is a popular event for many Pro Tour female athletes. From now, being Challengers, we believe it will make even more Pro Team women participate in fighting for their Yellow bib bonus points. And all participants being part will now collect Ski Classics ranking points as well as digital diplomas and pins; these are to be found on Ski Classics MyPages,” says Ski Classics CEO David Nilsson.

Celebrating the 35th edition this winter, Tjejvasan is considered the world’s biggest ski race only for women. The race starts in Oxberg and finishes in Mora – the same as Vasaloppet.

“We believe the Challengers status for Tjejvasan will lift the event from an international perspective. Hopefully, it will attract even more elite and recreational female athletes to ski this traditional race already upcoming winter,” says Tommy Höglund, Chief of Sport at Vasaloppet organization.

Tjejvasan is part of Vasaloppet’s Winter Week 2023, which takes place from February 24 to March 5. It offers several competitions, including Vasaloppet, part of the Ski Classics Pro Tour, and now Tjejvasan, part of the Ski Classics Challengers calendar.
