After finishing 24th in the Pro Team competition in Season XVI and seeing all athletes improve their results, the Bruse Sauerland Ski Team is entering Ski Classics Season XVII with a renewed focus on development, structure, and community.

After notable progress in Season XVI, the German-based Pro Team, Bruse Sauerland Ski Team, is entering the new winter with a clear plan: to grow sustainably by reinforcing team structure, integrating young talent, and maintaining the passion and professionalism that define the group’s identity.

The Pro Team Director Lennert Versen shares his thoughts on the new Ski Classics Season XVII calendar and the road ahead:

“The Ski Classics Pro Tour Season XVII calendar leaves mixed impressions,” says Lennert Versen, and adds: “There’s one less weekend in the Alps, which means a longer break between Bad Gastein and La Diagonela. But the calendar becomes very intense after Vasaloppet, with several challenging races in quick succession.”

While acknowledging the ambition behind the new formats, Versen expresses reservations about their place within the Pro Tour:

“The Bedřichov Sprint is an exciting event, but it seems a bit out of place in the Pro Tour, traditionally focused on long-distance skiing. The 50km ITT, however, is an intriguing format. It’s a classic distance, and it will be interesting to see who performs well just a week after Vasaloppet. It will be interesting to see how spectators receive this event format.”

Last season brought several proud moments for the German-based Pro Team, most notably their climb to 19th overall after Vasaloppet (finishing Season XVI in the 24th position) and the consistent progression of all athletes. The Pro Team Director also emphasizes its strong support structure:

“We’re proud of the excellent organizational and volunteer work behind the scenes – in technique, service, media, cooking, and more. Our Pro Team is supported on a voluntary basis, but we always aim to leave a professional impression. Their dedication is invaluable,” says Lennert Versen.

Looking ahead, the Bruse Sauerland Ski Team remains focused on long-term development:

“Our primary aim is to continue the development and progress we’ve seen within the team over the past few years. We have several new additions from Germany and Scandinavia, including young talents whom we are eager to successfully integrate into the team and develop over the coming years. Adjust the levers within the organization and structures to provide the greatest possible support and professionalism. At the same time, the enjoyment in each task should not be neglected.”

In addition to the squad’s seasoned athletes, Henric Thunander, who impressed last season, is now a full-time team member. The Pro Team is also active during the dryland season, participating in local and international events to foster camaraderie and enhance fitness. Their summer activities include city runs, German roller ski marathon series, and the traditional “Asten Rolling,” a demanding climb to the Kahler Asten – the highest point in the Sauerland region.

“We have also brought in several promising young German-speaking athletes in the same age group. Despite being geographically dispersed, our team is actively working on building camaraderie and team spirit through various summer activities. These events allow us to strengthen our team dynamics and prepare for the upcoming season. We are excited about what we will experience together in the upcoming season.”
