Östersund to host Biathlon World Championships in 2031
Östersund will host the Biathlon World Championships in 2031, having decisively won the vote against Kontiolahti.
The International Biathlon Union (IBU) announced today, Friday, September 18, 2026, during its Congress in Berchtesgaden, Germany, that Östersund has been awarded the Biathlon World Championships in 2031. Östersund won the vote against Finnish Kontiolahti with a score of 37–10.
“We are ready to deliver and are already underway with preparations,” said the Union’s Secretary General Rikard Grip at the Congress.

Fourth time hosting
This will be the fourth time Östersund has hosted the Biathlon World Championships, with the last event held in 2019. It will be the first time in twelve years that the championship takes place on Swedish soil.
