One of the most renowned and respected biathlon venues in the world is facing a significant challenge. The Italian site of Antholz/Anterselva, which hosts prestigious World Cups in winter and was the stage for Olympic medal battles this past February, has been hit hard by nature during the summer training period.

Flash disaster

A summer afternoon in the picturesque South Tyrolean valley turned into a dramatic battle against the elements after a severe storm followed by persistent rain. The deluge triggered a massive mudslide that rushed down the slopes directly into parts of the sports complex. The avalanche of rocks, mud, and uprooted trees transformed familiar areas of the biathlon stadium beyond recognition, leaving behind a trail of debris.

No injuries

Despite the alarming images and significant material damage, the incident had a fortunate outcome. At the time the skies opened over the valley, the Italian national team was preparing for the upcoming winter season at the arena. The biathletes managed to leave for their accommodations just in time, learning about the events at the competition site only from the safety of their hotels. Thankfully, no one was injured.

Initial assessments by local authorities indicated that while the natural elements impacted the surface and surrounding areas of the tracks, the core infrastructure of the stadium appears to have sustained no critical damage. The fire brigade secured the area immediately, and a detailed damage assessment is underway.

Emergency units and heavy machinery are already on standby. The removal of tons of mud, branches, and boulders will require several days of intensive work. Consequently, it is likely that the Italian team will need to adjust their training camp plans and temporarily relocate their preparations to another facility.
