The coach behind the World’s best biathletes is without a contract for next season. Now, the World Cup winner fears she could lose her successful coach.

Despite his athletes’ remarkable development, it remains unclear whether he will continue.

Cyril Burdet, the man who has led the World’s strongest women’s biathlon nation over the past four years, is currently without a contract extension.

At the same time, the Norwegian team’s gold-winning coach, Siegfried Mazet, has signed with the French Ski Association starting from the 2026/2027 season. He will take on the role of shooting coach for the French national team, although it is not yet decided which athletes he will work with.

Remarkable progress

Burdet joined the French women’s biathlon team as a physical coach after the 2022 Olympics, coming from a role as sprint coach for the French cross-country skiing team. However, despite the women’s team’s outstanding success over the past four years, it is not certain he will remain through to the 2030 Olympics.

Now, World Cup winner Lou Jeanmonnot hopes the situation will be clarified as soon as possible. The 27-year-old made her position clear just minutes after receiving the overall crystal globe in Holmenkollen last weekend.

“Personally, I really hope he stays. And I think the rest of the team feels the same. We want to continue working with him,” Jeanmonnot told NordicMag.

“I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved during the four years we have had him, and I want four more years.”

Several coaches on the move

In addition to Siegfried Mazet, who is leaving the Norwegian team for France, several coaches are currently on the move.

Sweden’s Swiss shooting coach Jean-Marc Chabloz is leaving his position and moving into a role outside elite sport.

Finnish coach Jonne Kähkönen is ending his contract with the Italian national team, where he has worked with stars such as Lisa Vittozzi, Dorothea Wierer, Lukas Hofer, and Tommaso Giacomel.

Sandra Flunger, head coach of the Swiss women’s team, is stepping down after eight years. The USA’s head coach, Armin Auchentaller, has also announced he will leave after this season.

There are also reports that Italian coach Patrick Oberegger, currently working with the Norwegian women’s biathlon team, could be heading to France, according to Langd.se.

Sverre Røiseland, husband of Marte Olsbu Røiseland, has finished his contract as a coach for the German team. He confirms he is in contact with the Norwegian Biathlon Association.
