Biathlon legend Laura Dahlmeier passes away in Pakistan
Laura Dahlmeier, one of the most successful biathletes of her generation, has been found dead following a climbing accident in Pakistan.
The 31-year-old Laura Dahlmeier, a double Olympic champion and seven-time World Champion, was reported missing after being caught in a rockslide on Monday, July 28, during a mountaineering expedition in the Karakoram range.
The accident occurred at approximately 5,700 meters on the flanks of Laila Peak, a 6,096-meter-high mountain in northern Pakistan. Dahlmeier was climbing with a partner when a sudden rockfall hit the pair. While her partner was able to call for help and was later rescued, Dahlmeier could not be reached due to poor weather and the remote location.
Rescue efforts hampered by weather
According to the German broadcaster ZDF and news agency DPA, two local rescue teams were deployed, but adverse conditions—strong winds and low visibility—hampered the mission. Dahlmeier’s body was located on Wednesday, July 30. Her death has now been officially confirmed by her management.
In a previous article on ProXCskiing.com, we reported that Dahlmeier had been seriously injured, with the extent of the accident still unclear at the time. The rescue teams had been attempting to reach her since Monday, but the high-altitude terrain and persistent bad weather delayed access to the site.

Body recovery will not be carried out
In a statement relayed by ZDF, her management confirmed that recovery of her body would not be carried out:
“Recovering the body is too risky for the rescue workers under the current difficult conditions with rockfall and a change in the weather on Laila Peak and is not feasible.”
“It was Laura Dahlmeier’s express and written will that in a case like this, no one should risk their life to rescue her. Her wish was to leave her body on the mountain. This is also in the interest of her relatives, who expressly request that Laura’s final wishes be respected.”
From biathlon star to mountaineer and commentator
After retiring from elite sport in 2019, Laura Dahlmeier shifted her focus to mountaineering. A certified mountain and ski guide, she also served as a biathlon expert for the German broadcaster ZDF, where she was widely appreciated for her insightful commentary and passion for the sport.
A legacy to remember
Dahlmeier leaves behind a remarkable legacy in biathlon. At the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, she became the first woman to win both the sprint and pursuit at a single Games. The previous year, at the 2017 World Championships in Hochfilzen, she delivered a historic performance with five gold medals and one silver in six races.
She was widely respected not only for her achievements on the track but also for her integrity, resilience, and dedication.
The global biathlon community is mourning the loss of a true champion.
