Out of the Tour de Ski after a frightening crash, Olympic participation in doubt
The 27-year-old is considered one of Norway’s biggest medal hopes. Now, she fears for her Olympic chances after a dramatic crash in the sprint final on the opening day of the Tour de Ski.
Mathilde Myhrvold has been in excellent form since the season opener in Beitostølen. She was the best Norwegian in the sprint prologue and advanced comfortably to the final of the Tour de Ski opening race. But then everything came to a sudden halt.
The sprint specialist struggled to finish after crashing in the final. Medical examinations later confirmed that Myhrvold dislocated her shoulder.
“Mathilde was unlucky and crashed. She tried to break the fall with her left arm and, unfortunately, dislocated her left shoulder,” national team doctor Ove Feragen told NRK.
Terrible timing
As a result, Myhrvold is forced to withdraw from the entire Tour de Ski, a devastating blow for the 27-year-old. She had major ambitions for this year’s Tour and was still fighting for an Olympic quota place.
The next Olympic selection will be made after the Tour de Ski, and results from the Tour were expected to play a key role. A dislocated shoulder just a month before the Olympic Games could also complicate her recovery, and cross-country skiing expert Fredrik Aukland fears she may struggle to be ready in time.
“A dislocated shoulder is clearly problematic with the Olympics in February in mind,” NRK expert Fredrik Aukland said.
Dramatic final
Myhrvold was running in second place behind eventual winner Kristine Stavås Skistad early in the final but began to lose ground as the race progressed. She was in fifth position when she ran into trouble and crashed at high speed, without any contact from other competitors.
The story will be updated.
