The former cross-country skier and women’s team coach, Andreas Domeij, is leaving his role with the Swedish national cross-country ski team.

Now, the former skier and women’s team coach, Andreas Domeij, is departing from the Swedish national team. The cross-country national team announced the decision in a press release.

The Swedish cross-country team has achieved fantastic success on both the men’s and women’s sides. The team made history during the World Championships in Trondheim when more individual athletes than ever before won medals, with a total of eleven medals earned by seven different athletes.

With the season now concluded, the national team management has decided to make use of the option available in April to end Andreas Domeij’s contract.

“We have not been able to shape Andreas’s role within the women’s team as intended. We haven’t managed to create an environment where he can fully utilize his strengths and have therefore concluded that a change is needed going forward,” says Anders Byström.

Aiming to Optimize the Team for the Olympics

Anders Byström explains that the national team makes small changes every year and justifies this decision by highlighting the need to optimize the organization ahead of the Olympic Games.

“The goal is to maintain a world-class national team program, and it’s important that we continuously evaluate how we can improve both ourselves and the overall organization. We have an Olympic season ahead of us and will do everything possible to create the best conditions for success.”

Unexpected Decision

Domeij told SVT Sport that the decision came as a surprise.

“It was unexpected, and of course, I wanted to continue. Some may talk about bitterness, but that’s absolutely not the case,” the former national team coach told SVT Sport.

“I’m proud of what I’ve done,” he added.

As a skier, Domeij achieved his best results in sprint competitions. He has six World Cup starts, with a top finish of 14th place.
