Men’s 15km Race F – Preview

The men’s 15km freestyle race is among the most exciting cross-country skiing competitions. This year, the event will take place at the Planica World Championships on Wednesday, March 1, 2023. Here are some highlights of the contenders to keep an eye on:

Hans Christer Holund, the reigning World Champion in the 15km freestyle, has already achieved two distance successes in previous Championships. With a win in Planica, he could become the second cross-country skier ever to win multiple 15km events, following in the footsteps of Veikko Hakulinen.

Johannes Høsflot Klæbo, the 15km classic bronze medalist at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, will be looking to reach the podium again. Johan Olsson was the last cross-country skier to achieve this, who won silver in 2014 and gold in 2015.

Simen Hegstad Krüger, who won three distance medals at the World Championships in 2021, including a silver in the 15km freestyle, and the gold at the skiathlon race in Planica, will be keen to prove himself again.

Finally, several other contenders are also in the mix. Hugo Lapalus, at age 24, could become the youngest winner of a 15km event at the World Championships since 2003. Jens Burman and William Poromaa are Sweden’s main medal threats, with Poromaa hoping to equal or surpass the number of medals won by his mother, Anette Fanqvist, at the World Championships. Andrew Musgrave will aim to win Great Britain’s first medal in any World Championships event.

With such a talented and diverse field, the Planica Men’s 15km Freestyle is sure to be a thrilling competition, and cross-country skiing fans won’t want to miss it.

Planica, Slovenia, is the place for this winter season’s World Championships, with ten competitions in 12 days and the last race being the men’s cross-country skiing 50km mass start race on March 5, 2023.
